COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 97-year-old World War II veteran Bob Charles shared his memorable Thanksgiving in Okinawa when his brother Buddy surprised him by hitchhiking over 50 miles to visit after they had been apart for three years. He enlisted at 17 with his father’s signature and recalls that holiday meal as one of his most cherished service moments.  WBAY
  • Touchmark on West Prospect held its third annual Veterans Ball on Veterans Day to honor residents who served by offering cocktails, appetizers, and jazz—recognizing around 20 veterans and their families. The event cost $20 for guests but was free for all who served, with veteran Leroy Frahm stressing the value of supporting both groups.  WBAY
  • On Tuesday, local donors gave 14,405 pounds of food plus $4,058 to St. Joseph Food Program during Day 2 of the FOX 11 Food Project—almost four times last year's total. The drive supports neighbors facing high costs and will continue with events in Oshkosh on Wednesday, Manitowoc on Thursday and Marinette on Friday.  FOX 11
  • Appleton’s Light the Night Market: Holiday Edition will return Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. in downtown, offering local vendors, live entertainment and food trucks for families — the event is free and marks the start of the holiday season.  WOSH-AM
  • Quilts of Valor honors military service members by providing handmade quilts to veterans and active duty—over 1,100 volunteers nationwide help craft these quilts with roughly 300 contributors from our area. Staff Sergeant Patrick Garcia praised the heartfelt gift he received from a Door County volunteer—he said the quilt shows genuine care for those who have served.  WBAY
  • Culver's announced Tuesday that its 'Concretes for a Cause' fundraiser will run from November 17 to November 21, with $1 from each concrete mixer sale aiding local hunger relief initiatives and food banks. Officials reported that last year's event raised over $517,000, bringing total donations to more than $1.7 million (now in its 5th year).  WOSH-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Samsung partnered with Appleton Technical Academy yesterday to open the Academy Bay lab + the new space gives high school students hands-on training in home appliance service as part of Samsung Care.  WOSH-AM
  • State education officials updated school report cards after 26 leaders met and voted 25-1 on new performance benchmarks that score achievement, growth, target group outcomes & on-track to graduation. Under the new system, Appleton received a 'Meets expectations' score of 67.3 while 94% of public school districts met or exceeded expectations, and scores for next year will not be directly comparable to past years.  FOX 11

  • Outagamie County Zoning Committee approved a proposed gravel quarry in the Town of Center yesterday after nearly two hours of debate — local officials say the decision will address the region’s need for limestone — while some residents worry about increased truck traffic and water quality issues.  WBAY
