COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A monument honoring Revolutionary War veteran Captain Hendrick Aupaumut in Kaukauna is set for an upgrade as community leaders and city planners work to improve the site. Work will begin this coming spring with hopes for a completed project next year — the update will include a new parklet at the historic location on Hendricks and Reaume Ave.  WTAQ
  • Packers staff served breakfast to veterans at Saint James Methodist Church in Appleton last Friday—part of Salute to Service week—in partnership with Vets and Friends of Wisconsin to honor veterans for their service.  WBAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Stone Arch Brew Pub in Appleton revived Adler Brau beer using the original 1940s recipe—announced on Nov. 4. Patrons can taste the historic brew at the pub.  Post-Crescent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Tony Evers signed a law last week that bans cell phone use during class and the new rule will take effect July 1; many districts, including Appleton Area School District, already lock phones away during lessons. The law will require public schools to update their policies — officials say the change helps students stay focused.  FOX 11
  • Lawrence University received 56,000 square feet of donated space at City Center East in downtown Appleton from three local investment firm owners—who chose the university as the obvious partner after its recent campus expansion. University officials are now working with community partners to decide the best use for the space as they plan to extend their academic mission.  WTAQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR reported that more than 50 round gobies have been seen in Lake Winnebago after earlier monitoring captured only 9 on September 18—officials are using trapping, fishing, and backpack shocking to control the invasive species that threaten native fish eggs. They said continued surveys next year will help ensure the lake’s predator population keeps the gobies in check.  WBAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal officials announced that if the shutdown continues, the FAA will reduce 10% of flights at 40 major airports beginning Friday to ease staffing shortages, and up to 1,800 flights nationwide could be halted. Appleton International’s direct flights remain unchanged—travelers with connections are advised to check their airline apps for updates.  WTAQ
