COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Appleton homeowner Kim Jones transformed her house at 1007 East Marquette Street into a spooky display to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Dravet Syndrome Foundation. The display, which remains through November 7, has helped collect several hundred dollars this year and almost $1,500 in total over four years.  NBC 26
  • Volunteer Fox Cities launched Make A Difference Week to encourage local residents to help by donating supplies, picking up litter, and packing toolkits for kids' mental health support—organizers partnered with Miron Construction on Monday to pack giggle kits at Catalpa. The effort leads up to National Make a Difference Day on Saturday.  WBAY

  • Festival Foods and Hometown Grocers completed their sale when 1939 Group purchased the chains on Monday—adding 51 Wisconsin stores to its Schnuck Markets network. Todd Schnuck now leads Festival Foods as CEO, replacing Mark Skogen.  FOX 11

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Analysts say increased oil production from OPEC and allied nations has driven gas prices below $3 per gallon nationwide. In Appleton, drivers paid an average of $2.58 per gallon on Monday & experts expect prices to remain below last year's levels for the coming months.  FOX 11
  • Spectrum awarded Appleton-based VPI, Inc. a $35,000 grant on Monday morning at its Kensington Production Facility to support workforce development programs under the $30 million Spectrum Community Center Assist initiative. The grant, which brings Spectrum’s total support to $125,000 over the past three years—helped update technology and expand job training programs for over 2,000 local residents.  WOSH-AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On October 19th, viewers shared fall photos that showed bright, bold leaves and cooling temperatures in northeast Wisconsin—creating a mini tour of the season's outdoor beauty.  FOX 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Joe Toonen, a lung cancer survivor from Appleton, was diagnosed with stage three lung cancer even though he never smoked and is now cancer-free after more than one year of treatment. He said the stigma around lung cancer has reduced research funding and his nurse practitioner Daisy Boehm urged anyone with unusual symptoms to see a doctor.  WOSH-AM
  • Aurora Health Care hosted its annual NICU Halloween Costume Bash where families dressed their tiny patients in creative costumes to celebrate an early Halloween. Community members can vote on their favorite photos on the hospital's Facebook page until noon Oct 27—winners will receive prizes while the staged images do not follow safe sleep guidelines.  WOSH-AM

  • UW-Oshkosh will launch a women's flag football program in spring to boost enrollment and community engagement—new head coach Deante Jefferson, who previously coached at Appleton North and led flag football camps, said he is excited about the growing interest with 29 students already showing interest.  FOX 11
