COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Fox Valley brat fry at Appleton American Legion Post 38 raised $16,000 on Aug. 21, 2024 for HonorFlight, more than doubling its $7,000 goal to support local veterans. The post hosted weekly events from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until October that funded veteran programs.  WTAQ
  • Appleton American Legion Post 38 held its brat fry on August 20 and raised a record $16,000 for Old Glory Honor Flight, exceeding their 2024 goal of $7,000. The event featured new menu items and special displays—honoring veterans and offering healing for those who served in Vietnam.  WOSH-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sandy Slope Elementary School in Appleton will open Sept. 2 at 2625 E. Edgewood Drive to serve 600 students with flexible classroom pods and modern learning spaces. The new school also features an orange-capped silo and Lightning Bug mascot—details that honor its heritage and support growth in the northeast—funded by a $130 million referendum.  Post-Crescent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Northland Avenue bridge over I-41 in Grand Chute will reopen mid-September with a new diverging diamond design to ease traffic, and northbound ramps will also be back in service. Southbound ramps are closed for realignment until mid-November while the Wisconsin Avenue off‑ramp will open before Labor Day—WisDOT said.  Post-Crescent
  • Wisconsin legislators have proposed a three-day sales tax holiday that will begin on the first Friday in August and end the following Sunday to help ease back-to-school shopping costs for families and teachers—supporters say the measure could lower expenses as studies show families plan to spend over $850 on supplies.  WTAQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Outagamie County Public Health confirmed that a dead bat tested positive for rabies after being submitted for lab testing on August 18, and no humans were exposed. Officials advise that if a bat is trapped at home, it should be sent for testing and any bites or scratches must be washed with soap and water (10 to 15 minutes) before seeking medical care.  Post-Crescent
