CRIME NEWS

  • Alic Riedel was sentenced Monday to two years in prison and four years of extended supervision for a hit-and-run that injured a bicyclist on July 24 and left the victim with life-changing injuries—he must speak to youth groups, write a letter to the victim's family, and pay restitution of $18,837.74.  WTAQ
  • On August 16, Appleton Police arrested a man after a disturbance on West Wisconsin Avenue when a driver displayed a handgun during a dispute and was later booked on charges including felon in possession of a firearm, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and a probation violation—witness interviews and surveillance footage helped identify his vehicle.  WOSH-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community members gathered at the Appleton Public Library to share worries about a proposed truancy plan that may fine, counsel, or require supervised work for students with more than five unexcused absences. School Board member Ed Ruffolo, attending as a community member (AASD), said he plans to use these ideas to find creative ways to help students stay in school.  WOSH-AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Advocates plan to form a nonprofit lake association to tackle water quality challenges at Little Lake Butte des Morts, including algae blooms and excessive aquatic plant growth. They will hold an information meeting today at 6:30 p.m. at the Neenah Public Library & the effort will involve residents from five nearby municipalities along the Fox River.  Post-Crescent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Nichols Rural Fire Department in Outagamie County received a $10,000 grant for new equipment as part of the Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program. The award is one of $1.5 million given to 150 volunteer fire departments in 44 states—designed to help cover rising costs for essential gear.  FOX 11
