Good morning, Appleton. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In June, Bergstrom Automotive raised a record $375,000 during its JUNE 3500 campaign for Make-A-Wish Wisconsin by gathering donations from test drives, vehicle purchases and a special Oil Change Day held at its Fox Valley, Green Bay, Oshkosh and Madison locations. The funds will help grant wishes to children with critical illnesses — a milestone in the company’s long-standing support for local families.  WOSH-AM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Outagamie County installed 50 miles of fiber-optic internet on July 8th and Bug Tussel will add 125 more miles to boost rural service and serve about 700 households—this project was funded by a $24 million county bond that the provider will repay.  WTAQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Appleton is considering issuing truancy citations to families after repeated absences, which would affect about 30 students. A community listening session is set for August 4—guiding officials toward a final decision in early fall.  FOX 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Zebra mussels have spread to over 1,000 lakes since the 1980s and although they clear water, experts say they boost toxic blue-green algae and move mercury through the food chain. Boaters are urged to clean equipment after lake visits — residents on Lake Winnebago report large drifts of the invasive mussels on their shores.  WOSH-AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state appeals court overturned Neenah’s ordinance that limited short-term rentals to primary residence owners on Wednesday, ruling that the rule conflicted with state law (WIS. STAT. 66.1014) after a lawsuit by the Wisconsin Realtors Association.  WTAQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Appleton teen Brett Jedwabny (16) made great strides in his recovery from a life-threatening brain injury caused by a power-washer accident one year ago when he walked 120 yards through Badger Sports Park without using his wheelchair, and he plans to walk the stage at the state fishing tournament next March to accept his second master’s plaque.  WBAY
