Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 7th of July.
Good morning, Appleton.
🏘️ Community
Our Pack Animal Rescue helps dogs find loving homes by placing them in foster families throughout the Fox Valley.
Foster parent Shado VanEyck cares for Spock (from Alabama) and Sophie (from Texas), offering training and support since 2019.
Throughout July, Festival Foods stores in Appleton, Kimberly, Menasha and Neenah will host diaper drives for United Way Fox Cities’ Kimberly-Clark Eastern Wisconsin Diaper Bank.
The network served 931,453 diapers last year to help 1,500 children each month (donations of unopened packages in sizes newborn, 5 and 6 are needed).
🌲 Environment
Extreme heat and humidity in Northeast Wisconsin are stressing dairy cows as temperatures above 70°F cause milk production to drop 5-15% and reduce feed intake.
Dairy farmers are adapting by using cow trackers (Fitbits for cows) and improved barn designs to keep the herd safe, especially during warm nights.
🏛️ Government
FEMA is accepting federal disaster aid applications for residents still affected by the historic April floods in northeastern counties.
Homeowners and renters in Brown, Outagamie, Waupaca, Winnebago, and the Oneida Nation should file insurance claims first and may apply online (or by phone) for relief covering uninsured damages.
📰 Lifestyle
Today, northeast Wisconsin ice cream shops are celebrating National Ice Cream Month by serving up local flavors + creative twists that mix tradition with seasonal specialties.
Appleton’s Legendairy Cookies ‘N Creamery and other local parlors use regional dairy and ingredients to keep ice cream heritage alive.
