COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mary Beth Nienhaus Activity Center in Appleton opened on May 28 to offer over 300 unique activities for seniors, including pool, pickleball, table tennis, yoga, and tai chi (located at 3000 E. College Avenue). Donations to the center will be matched dollar for dollar up to $400,000, which will help build an endowment for ongoing programs.  WTAQ
  • On May 6, children across Northeast Wisconsin received comic book-style Milwaukee Brewers trading cards from local police officers as the program expanded from last year’s pilot with Milwaukee officers — Green Bay and 30 other agencies, including Appleton, participated in the initiative.  FOX 11

CRIME NEWS

  • Menasha police have warned residents about scam texts that falsely claim a driver’s license or vehicle registration is about to be suspended & advised not to click on any links since the scam is designed to steal personal information.  FOX 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emplify Health and Marquette University announced a pilot program on Wednesday that will recruit 5 students over the next 5 years to earn master’s degrees in mental health care and address the provider shortage in Northeast Wisconsin & Upper Peninsula. The program, funded by a gift from the Richard J. Resch Foundation, will provide financial assistance and clinical training including internships and post-graduate fellowships scheduled to start in the fall.  WBAY
  • Grace Schara, a 19-year-old with Down syndrome who died in October after being admitted for COVID-19 at Ascension NE Wisconsin-St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, is now the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit as her father alleges that hospital staff gave her unauthorized medications—leading to her respiratory distress rather than death solely from COVID-19. The trial began on June 2 at the Outagamie County Courthouse and is expected to include testimony from up to 22 witnesses that could set a legal precedent.  Post-Crescent
