  • For the 55th year, Appleton Boy Scouts placed over 6,000 American flags on veterans' graves at Appleton Highland Memorial Park — more than 100 scouts and families joined the tradition. The cemetery will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday.  WBAY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two families were displaced by a duplex fire on East Winnebago Street on Thursday morning when firefighters arrived at 9:30 a.m., controlled heavy smoke within 20 minutes, and no one was injured—while the American Red Cross is helping the affected families.  WBAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Appleton International Airport has announced its 20th nonstop flight to Gulf Shores, Alabama—Allegiant Travel Company will begin service this fall on Oct. 2 with one-way fares starting at $59. This new route gives air travelers a long-awaited direct connection—meeting a request from Northeast Wisconsin residents.  WHBY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawrence University is working with Appleton Area School District to offer a direct admission pathway for high school seniors with a 3.4 GPA or higher—students will receive automatic acceptance, a $45,000 annual scholarship, and help with campus visits during their junior year.  WTAQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Appleton Common Council voted to ban alcohol within 20 feet of playgrounds and pavilions at city parks to cut down on bad behavior. Officials said the rule will help police enforce it and keep parks safe for kids — it permits alcohol only in reserved pavilions or during special events — as the city aims to curb disruptive actions.  WTAQ
  • Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford proclaimed Safe Boating Week in Appleton yesterday as part of National Safe Boating Week. The proclamation was made at Whiting Boathouse in Neenah — where he urged boaters to wear life vests, avoid boating under the influence and check water conditions — to enhance boating safety.  WBAY
