COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pillars, an affordable housing service, has provided over $1M in rent subsidies and now serves more than 300 people in Appleton. The organization, which adjusts rent to 30% of tenants' income and relies on donated properties (including a 20-unit donation from Dick Reetz), hopes to expand its portfolio.  FOX 11
  • The Wings over Wisconsin Denmark chapter held a free fishing event for kids on Thursday, May 14 behind Potts Transport at 5399 State Highway 29 in Eaton; it ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering door prizes, free concessions, and on-site fishing gear (lawn chairs are recommended).  FOX 11

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On May 14, fuel prices across Fox Cities ranged from $4.09 to $4.69; Woodman's Market Gas and Lube offered the lowest rate while stations near retail and schools charged more — spikes are linked to global tensions and local refinery issues. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawrence University celebrates the start of construction on The Hub, a state-of-the-art recreation and gathering space for campus and Fox City community located on the lower level of the city center east building downtown. The project is the first phase of a level-up plan that will later include an indoor training facility called The Loop.  WBAY
  • Lawrence University announced plans for a new fitness & recreation center on campus to boost student wellness. The project is in early planning and will offer modern facilities for active lifestyles.  NBC 26
  • Fox Valley Literacy will use a 700 sqft community classroom at the new Archive Apartments on E. Wisconsin Ave — which will open in late spring — to expand its adult literacy classes while keeping its main center on Franklin Street.  WTAQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Arthritis Foundation of Wisconsin will host its Walk to Cure Arthritis on Sunday, June 7 at Pierce Park; the event features a one-mile walk, picnic lunch, dog area, fair station, mobility mat, and s’mores activities with free registration, and funds support children and adults through programs like Camp MASH.  WBAY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Appleton plans to invest $74 million in infrastructure for Wilden Portfolio Park, a mixed-use project at Thrivent headquarters on N. Ballard Rd. The Plan Commission approved a Tax Incremental District (TID) to fund streets, utilities, and park amenities, and the Common Council will soon review the proposal.  FOX 11

  • Northeast Wisconsin Olympian Paul Schommer, recently retired from the U.S. Biathlon Team, was hired by Ariens Nordic Center to work with local youth on outdoor sports & recreational programs in Brillion. His experience is expected to boost the center’s programming.  FOX 11
