  • Nearly six years after Appleton firefighter Mitch Lundgaard was killed, his family honored his memory by donating 25 bleeding control kit cabinets to the Appleton Area School District—each cabinet holds a bag with six kits to help stop life-threatening blood loss until help arrives.  WTAQ
  • Appleton Downtown Inc. will host the free Light the Night Market on May 16 from 5 to 10 p.m. on College Avenue between Superior and Durkee; the Renaissance-themed event will feature free live music + food vendors + craft stalls for visitors to enjoy.  Post-Crescent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Student performers in the Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program rehearsed at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center as news cameras captured their practice for the upcoming Musical Showcase on Saturday, May 17th + the event will honor local talent and announce two students chosen for the Jimmy Awards Program.  We Are Green Bay
  • The History Museum at the Castle is set to receive a collection from the Weis Earth Science Museum after final contracts are approved by UW-Oshkosh and the Board of Regents; the museum will spend the next few months safely cataloguing and moving materials—starting with pieces on public display before opening the exhibit by the end of summer.  FOX 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wrightstown’s school board filled two vacancies on May 14 by choosing Jason Podgorski and Kelly Schaumberg to replace Tony Decker and Michael Mollen after their resignations—both new members stressed the importance of trust and clear communication to heal divisions in the board.  Post-Crescent
  • Appleton Area School District is reviewing the idea of issuing truancy tickets as city officials voted to delay fines — the district has not used fines in six years despite a rise in student absences. Superintendent Greg Hartjes said new programs like TRAC will support students, and community input will be gathered in late August or September — officials aim to better address chronic truancy.  FOX 11

  • On May 13, Outagamie County passed three resolutions that ended its ownership in the UW Fox Cities campus in exchange for the Weis Earth Science Museum collection and a dollar — Winnebago County will become the sole owner when the campus closes at the end of the school year pending final UW Board of Regents approval on June 30 —.  Post-Crescent
