  • The Light the Night Market returns downtown on May 15 from 5 to 10 p.m. The free outdoor event by Appleton Downtown Inc. will span College Avenue between Superior & Durkee streets and offer local vendors, live music, and family attractions such as a Ferris Wheel and Houdini Plaza Stage shows.  Post-Crescent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cell.Plus (a 30-year local business) announced it will permanently close all 18 Wisconsin retail locations and lay off 66 employees by July 31 after its Agent Operating Agreement was not renewed.  WOSH-AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Canvas, a system used by colleges and schools in the region, was hacked on May 1, which disrupted classes and exams. Officials are investigating and said users should avoid clicking any suspicious links (no passwords or financial details were at risk).  FOX 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three peregrine falcon chicks hatched at the Essity paper mill in Menasha on May 7, continuing an 11-year nesting tradition. The Wisconsin Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project will band the chicks in about two weeks to support its conservation work.  FOX 11
  • Since Tuesday, a marabou stork native to Africa has been sighted in Northeast Wisconsin, including Appleton, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, and Sheboygan—witnesses say its unusual route continues as wildlife officials monitor its safety.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FEMA inspectors toured flood-damaged areas along the Wolf River in Outagamie and Waupaca counties yesterday—inspections will help officials decide if a federal emergency declaration is needed by May 23. One local resident said his home is unsafe after the severe flooding.  WHBY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wisconsin announced its season opener at Lambeau Field with the Badgers set to play Notre Dame at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, and the game will air on NBC as part of the Labor Day college football slate.  WBAY
