BUSINESS NEWS

  • Memorial Florist in Appleton is preparing for Mother’s Day, a favorite season for Bob Aykens. The shop expects families to shop for bouquets and planters and anticipates minor delivery fee hikes based on weather conditions (sunny days boost patio plants, while rainy days favor fresh flowers).  WBAY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wisconsin lost nearly 10,000 manufacturing jobs between January 2025 and January 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The decline may challenge the state’s lead in manufacturing as numbers have steadily dropped since October 2022.  WBAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Shiocton School District requested a one-year waiver from the state after eight school days were lost due to severe flooding. Damage assessments are underway and the state may request federal aid by May 23 (Superintendent Garrett Zimmerman said the waiver is needed to cover lost instructional days).  WTAQ
  • Appleton East High School teacher Janeal Spring now guides high school students through an alternative education program that builds personal growth+life skills as other state educators are spotlighted during Teacher Appreciation Week from May 4 to 8.  Post-Crescent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spring has seen lake flies hatch along Lake Winnebago's shore yesterday, coating houses + cars. Experts say the harmless insects, a key food source for lake sturgeon, appear for only about a week each year.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Thomas J. Walsh, Judge William C. Griesbach and Appleton public defender Alaina Fahley have been honored with statewide awards from the State Bar for their excellence in legal writing, lifetime service and family defense. Their awards include the Charles Dunn Lawyer Author Award, Lifetime Jurist Award and Grant F. Langley Service Award.  WBAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Arthritis Foundation will host Walk to Cure Arthritis on June 7 at Pierce Park in Appleton, with a one-mile walk beginning at 11 a.m. and family activities + dog treat stations. Participants will receive a colorful pinwheel at check-in while funds raised support arthritis research.  WBAY

  • Sen. Baldwin has proposed the For the Fans Act to require sports leagues to offer a single free service so local fans can watch all home state teams+ her move aims to ease streaming frustrations for both fans and sports bars.  WBAY
  • The Green Bay Packers awarded $100K in grants to launch girls flag football teams, with six local schools receiving $5,000 and starter kits (including Freedom High School and Green Bay East). Applications are open for next year’s grants to further grow the sport.  WBAY
