- ➤ The Hmong American community in Fox Valley celebrated 50 years since the first immigrant arrived this week with live music, dance, and food at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center—followed by a performance of The Latehomecomer based on a novel by Kao Kalia Yang. Next fall the Hmong American Immersion School will open in Appleton to serve about 3,000 residents. FOX 11

- ➤ Officials at Appleton International Airport held an open house on April 17 to preview the 47,000-square-foot concourse and $66 million expansion project. Three new gates will open next Monday ahead of the NFL Draft on April 23-27 and further construction will extend ticketing, baggage claim and roadways + improve passenger amenities. WTAQ

- ➤ The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced Friday it would not sign the US Department of Education’s certification request related to Title VI compliance—citing unclear guidelines and a threat to local school control. DPI said it is waiting for further clarification on the request’s intent and legality. WBAY

- ➤ Two experienced runners from Appleton will compete in the 129th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21 to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and honor those lost to cancer. Karen Burke, who trains on the Apple Creek Trail — and Steve Wieckert, who recalls the 2013 marathon bombing, both run to help fund cancer research and treatments. WBAY
