  • An Appleton police officer helped a paralyzed man who fell from his wheelchair near a parking lot ramp while he was being taken to a medical facility, and stayed until the patient received care + the action reflects the department's high standard of commitment.  WOSH-AM
  • Residents in Shiocton can help fill sandbags amid ongoing flood damage by heading to Ellington Fire Department (N3802 Highway 76), as officials posted on Facebook Friday morning and are accepting text registrations for future cleanup efforts.  FOX 11
  • Officials declared April as Strengthening Families Month on Friday at the new First 5 Fox Valley Family Resource Center building on College Avenue in Appleton + the proclamation aims to boost safe practices and strong support systems for children and families.  FOX 11
  • Providence Promise will open an emergency homeless shelter this winter at 314 N. Appleton Street following Mission Church selling the building. The Common Council approved the permit and the shelter will serve up to 50 people in extreme weather plus feature a hygiene station.  WTAQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hortonville High School closed early on April 17 so students could help with flood relief by sandbagging and preparing its fieldhouse (to serve as a Red Cross shelter) for affected communities in northern Outagamie and Waupaca counties. The school will not need to make up lost instructional time.  Post-Crescent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shiocton officials met at 9 a.m. Friday to assess rising floodwaters as the Wolf River passed 14½ feet — a level expected to rise further amid a forecast storm — and they urged residents to evacuate if they had not already done so.  WBAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Following recent flooding and tornadoes, Wisconsin Department of Health Services warned residents to follow safety protocols during storm cleanup. The agency advises using battery-powered lanterns, wearing sturdy boots (and gloves) and checking with utility companies before re-entering damaged buildings.  FOX 11
