COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Appleton veteran George Herberg, 102 and a WWII Navy veteran, received a Quilt of Valor from Vets and Friends of Wisconsin and the Daughters of the American Revolution on April 15 (a token of thanks) ahead of his 103rd birthday on May 10.  FOX 11
  • An emergency homeless shelter will open this December at 314 N. Appleton St. for residents in need during extreme weather (the Providence Promise group purchased the building from Mission Church and secured council approval).  FOX 11
  • FOX 11 donated $8,040 from Blizzard Elsa commemorative t-shirt sales to local homeless shelters, with St. John's Ministries Emergency Shelter Services and Pillars Crisis Housing each receiving $4,020. FOX 11 presented the checks on Thursday after last month’s record-breaking storm.  FOX 11
  • Breadsmith of Appleton donates 10% of today's sales to the local Red Cross to support families affected by recent flooding. The bakery also welcomes cash & card donations and urges anyone needing a meal to reach out.  WBAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mile of Music returns downtown this summer from July 30 through Aug. 2 with a shift to a fully community-run nonprofit model; organizers revealed its First 50 lineup featuring original artists including The Astronomers (from Oshkosh) with more performers to be announced.  WBAY
  • Appleton's Mile of Music festival (previously a hybrid model) will become fully nonprofit as final paperwork is set to be signed in about a week ahead of its 13th edition, marking a new chapter for the event.  FOX 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawrence University will begin restoring Memorial Chapel’s front façade (replacing the pediment and entablature) between April 28 and May 4 on College Ave. The project is scheduled for completion by early winter.  FOX 11
  • The Luxemburg-Casco School District banned highly caffeinated drinks for students in grades 3-6 at the Intermediate School effective immediately to support their health and learning. Parents are urged to provide water or milk as a healthier alternative.  WOSH-AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shiocton officials say residents can pick up sandbags from the Ellington Fire Department (self-serve option) amid flooding, while the village warns people to stay home and avoid flooded streets. Only one truck per household is allowed entry via Highway 54.  WBAY
