COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence Promise is relocating its downtown emergency shelter from St. Joseph’s Church on West Lawrence Street to the former Mission Church on North Appleton Street — the shelter will serve residents during extreme weather while the City Council votes on a special use permit next week.  WHBY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Doty Elementary students showcased LEGO machines during a library open house hosted by Susan Barnard, where 5th graders presented their junior pinball, cable cars and other programmed devices as part of the school's coding and STEM initiative during National Library Week.  WBAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers signed a law on Thursday, Apr. 9 that lets people place online sports bets throughout Wisconsin, provided bets from mobile devices are processed on tribal land, & tribes must now renegotiate their gaming compacts for equitable benefits.  Post-Crescent
  • East Frontage Road in Wrightstown will close at 6 a.m. April 14 for several months, and the northbound ramp from State 441 to I-41 in Appleton will be closed from 6 a.m. April 15 through May 1 — detours have been set by WisDOT for the 8,600 daily users.  Post-Crescent
  • Valley Transit released a plan to restore lost weeknight and Saturday services, extend bus routes to shopping and work centers in Appleton, and improve access to grocery stores; the plan says more drivers and local funding will be needed.  WHBY
  • Appleton officials are considering a $1.3 million purchase of 130 Meridian barriers — weighing 800 pounds each — to improve safety during summer events. The city council is expected to vote soon so that the new measure could be ready for upcoming festivals.  FOX 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Wednesday, ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah marked National Donate Life Month as hospital officials and an organ donor raised a flag and observed a 1-minute silence at 10:08 a.m. (one donor saves eight lives) to encourage residents to register, reminding all of the life-changing benefits of organ donation.  WTAQ
