  • Fox Valley warming shelters are open today to help residents beat the cold with hot drinks and snacks in Appleton, Neenah, and Oshkosh (for example, COTS for Men at 819 S. West Ave and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Neenah from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).  WHBY
  • Gustman Subaru in Appleton donated hundreds of coats to the Community Clothes Closet on Thursday, moving up its planned end-of-month drop-off to meet *subzero temperatures* gripping the area.  WBAY
  • Her Alliance will host a free community event Tuesday in Appleton focusing on online exploitation and sextortion as part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, with local law enforcement and advocates urging safe reporting.  WBAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Appleton restaurant owner Adam Marty of Ellinor is a semifinalist for a James Beard Award for best chef in the Midwest. Finalists will be announced on Mar. 31 and winners will be awarded in June.  WBAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A statewide survey shows rising confidence in technical colleges, with 66% of respondents thinking favorably (a 14% increase from 2022) and 76% saying the state benefits; enrollments remain high as Fox Valley Technical College and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College deepen transfer partnerships.  WBAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As deep freeze conditions continue, Quinney Fishing Club members have marked Lake Winnebago’s eastern shore with a tree line guiding visitors to a landing at Quinney and installed two 75-foot bridges (from a planned seven) over ice cracks following a vehicle fall last Sunday, advising caution as conditions change.  FOX 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Extreme cold with wind chills near -45 is forecast for today and Saturday at Appleton International Airport. Director Abe Weber said de-icing and indoor equipment storage will keep flights running while travelers should check airline apps for updates (other regions may face delays due to a winter storm).  FOX 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Congressman Tony Wied introduced the Blood Centers Act to ease opening of new donation centers amid low blood reserves, according to Community Blood Center officials. The legislation aims to cut red tape + expand donation access as winter weather increases need.  FOX 11
  • Doctors warn that extreme wind chills of 30 to 40 degrees below zero may cause frostbite and hypothermia in minutes, especially for children and older adults — Kaukauna Utilities has paused non-essential outdoor work and advises everyone to dress warmly.  WBAY
  • Mosaic Family Health named Leif Elsmo as its new president effective Jan. 26 — Dr. Lee Vogel will retire as executive director and work part time supporting the Fox Valley Family Medicine Residency Program.  Post-Crescent
