Good morning, Appleton.
🌲 Environment
Under severe cold, experts reported that observed 'exploding trees' are actually due to frost cracking, a process where sap quickly freezes and expands (causing a loud crack and sometimes falling branches).
The phenomenon, common in thin-barked trees, rarely results in complete explosions.
An Arctic blast will bring the coldest temperatures in seven years to Northeast Wisconsin starting Friday—with lows around -16°F on Friday and -19°F on Saturday and wind chills near -40°F in Green Bay.
